At-Home Family Photoshoot in Abu Dhabi
Why Your Home Is the Best LocationA family photoshoot at home is one of my favourite ways to tell a family’s story. When parents ask me where to have their photos taken, they usually expect me to say the beach, the desert or a park. I love all of those places. But more and more often my answer is: your home.
An at-home family photoshoot in Abu Dhabi isn’t the “easy option”. For many families it’s simply the best one. Your home is where your children take their first steps, where you have slow Friday breakfasts and where bedtime stories happen. In ten years, those are the moments you’ll want to remember.
As a mum of twin boys, I know how fast these years go. I also know how hard it can be to get everyone dressed, in the car and smiling at a location at sunset. As a family photographer in Abu Dhabi without a studio, I always come to you, and home sessions have become some of my favourite stories to tell.
In this guide I’ll show you what an at-home session really looks like, how to get your home ready in 10 minutes and which moments make the most beautiful photos.
Why Home Is the Best Location for Family Photos
Your children feel safe and relaxed
Children open up much faster in their own space. There’s no new place to explore and no strangers walking past. Nobody says “stand here and smile”. Within minutes they’re showing me their favourite toys, jumping on the bed and forgetting about the camera. That’s exactly when the best photos happen.
Little ones set the pace
Nap time, feeding, a nappy change or a little meltdown are no problem at home. We simply pause and carry on when your baby or toddler is ready. Nobody is watching the clock or worrying about the sunset.
No heat, no sand, no traffic
For a big part of the year in Abu Dhabi, outdoor sessions are only possible for a short time around sunrise or sunset. At home we choose a time that suits your family, not the weather. No one ends up hot, tired or covered in sand. You don’t have to pack a bag or drive across the city either.
Your real family story
Photos at home show your life exactly as it is right now: your children’s room, the reading corner, the kitchen where everything happens, the way your toddler climbs onto your lap. These details feel ordinary today. In a few years they’ll be the photos you love most. And for many families in the UAE, this home is one chapter of a bigger story, so it’s worth remembering.
What a Family Photoshoot at Home Looks Like
A lot of parents imagine a home session as a “photoshoot in the living room”. In reality it feels much more like a relaxed morning or afternoon together, with me quietly following your family around.
- I arrive and look around. I find the room with the best window light. It takes a few minutes, and the children usually use that time to get to know me.
- We start slowly. Cuddles on the sofa or the bed, a book, a few simple family photos while everyone is still fresh.
- Then we play. Tickles, a blanket fort, dancing in the living room, pancakes in the kitchen. I give you small prompts, never stiff poses.
- Quiet moments at the end. A baby falling asleep on mum, a toddler whispering secrets to dad, a last hug.
The session usually takes about an hour. With babies and toddlers we take our time and follow their rhythm.
Who a Family Photoshoot at Home Is Perfect For
- Families with a newborn. Your baby stays warm, fed and close to everything they need. If you’re expecting, have a look at my in-home newborn sessions, or read Fresh 48 or in-home session? to choose the right one for you.
- Families with toddlers who need their own space, toys and snacks to feel at ease.
- Mums-to-be. Soft, intimate maternity photos in your bedroom with your partner or older children feel very personal.
- Summer in Abu Dhabi. From June to September, home is the most comfortable place for photos.
- Families who’d like something cosy and personal rather than a classic outdoor portrait.
- Grandparents visiting from abroad. Everyone together, at home, with no logistics.
You Don’t Need a Perfect House
This is the most common worry I hear: “Our home isn’t nice enough for photos.” It is, I promise.
All we really need is one room with a big window. Natural light does most of the work. A bedroom with light bedding or a sofa near the window is usually perfect. A small apartment works just as well as a big villa, because I photograph close and focus on your faces, hands and connection, not on the furniture.
Toys in the corner or a busy shelf? I’ll frame them out, or keep them in if they’re part of your story. Real life is welcome here.
How to Prepare for a Family Photoshoot at Home (in 10 Minutes)
You don’t need to deep-clean the whole house. Here’s a quick checklist for the day of your session:
- Open all curtains and blinds in the room with the most daylight.
- Switch off ceiling lights and lamps. Mixing daylight with warm bulbs makes colours look odd.
- Clear the surfaces in the main room: chargers, bottles, remote controls, piles of papers.
- Make the bed with light, plain bedding if you have it. White, beige and grey are ideal.
- Put away big, bright plastic toys from the main room, but keep one or two favourites out for your child.
- Set the air conditioning to a comfortable temperature, a little warmer if we’re photographing a baby.
- Have snacks and water ready. Happy children, happy photos.
That’s it. The rest is my job.
Ideas for At-Home Family Photos
You don’t need to plan poses. I’ll guide you gently, and most of these moments happen on their own. Choose two or three that feel like your family:
- Breakfast together. Pancakes, juice and little hands stealing strawberries.
- Morning cuddles in bed. Everyone in soft clothes or matching pyjamas, close and sleepy.
- Reading a favourite book on the sofa or in the children’s room.
- A blanket fort or a picnic blanket on the floor. Tickles and giggles are guaranteed.
- Baking together. Flour everywhere is very welcome.
- Dancing in the living room to your family’s favourite song.
- Bath time with a baby (keeping it simple and modest).
- Quiet moments with your newborn. Feeding, rocking, tiny fingers and toes.
- Your pet, because they’re part of the family too.

What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot at Home
At home, softer and more relaxed outfits look beautiful: neutral colours, natural fabrics, knitwear, linen and even matching pyjamas. Bare feet are perfect. Avoid big logos and very bright colours, because they pull attention away from your faces.

Home or Outdoors? How to Choose
Both are beautiful. They just tell different stories.
- Choose home if you have a baby or toddler, if it’s summer, or if you want intimate, everyday moments.
- Choose the beach, a park or the desert if your children have lots of energy and love to run, or if you dream of golden-hour light and wide open spaces, like the boardwalks of Jubail Mangrove Park.

Family Photoshoot at Home: FAQ
What time of day is best for a home session?
Morning or late afternoon, when the light through the windows is soft. If you have a little one, we’ll plan around naps, because a rested child is a happy child.
Is my apartment big enough?
Yes. I’ve photographed families in small apartments and big villas. One window and a little floor space is enough.
What if my child doesn’t want to cooperate?
That’s completely normal, and at home it’s much easier. We play, take breaks and follow your child. Some of my favourite photos were taken right after a little meltdown.
Can grandparents or pets join?
Yes, of course! Extended family and pets are welcome — just let me know beforehand so I can plan the time.
When will I receive my photos?
Within two weeks, in a private online gallery.
